Or maybe you’re a health-conscious eater looking to incorporate more nutrient-rich greens into your diet without needing a sprawling garden. Whatever the reason, growing microgreens can be a fulfilling and easy way to add fresh produce to your meals right at home.

To grow microgreens, choose a shallow tray or container, fill it with moistened soil, sprinkle your chosen seeds evenly across the surface, cover them lightly with a thin layer of soil, mist with water, and place them in a bright area. Keep the soil moist until they sprout, usually within 5-14 days, then harvest with scissors just above the soil line.

To expand on this, the process of growing microgreens begins with selecting the right seeds, such as radish, broccoli, kale, or basil, which are ideal for beginners. Use a shallow tray or container with drainage holes to prevent water accumulation. Fill the tray with a high-quality potting mix, leaving about an inch of space at the top. Moisten the soil thoroughly but ensure it’s not soggy before you begin planting.

Once the soil is ready, evenly sprinkle the seeds across the surface. For optimal results, sow them generously, but avoid overcrowding, as this can lead to mold and poor air circulation. After sowing, cover the seeds lightly with another thin layer of soil, about 1/8 inch deep, then mist the surface with water to keep it moist.

Place the tray in a bright location; direct sunlight is ideal, but if that’s not possible, fluorescent lights can work too. It’s crucial to maintain humidity during the germination phase, so covering the tray with a plastic dome or plastic wrap can help until the seeds sprout. Check daily to keep the soil moist, misting as needed.

Within 5 to 14 days, you will witness the seeds sprouting into vibrant greens. Once they reach about 2-4 inches in height, it’s time to harvest! Use sharp scissors to cut just above the soil line. Rinse them gently and you’re ready to enjoy your fresh microgreens in salads, sandwiches, or as a garnish on your favorite dishes.
