Have you ever opened your Word document, only to be met with a dark screen that feels more suited for late-night coding sessions than for drafting your latest report? You’re not alone. Many users opt for dark mode to reduce eye strain, but sometimes, you need that bright, white background to enhance readability and maintain focus. Whether you’re preparing a presentation for work or simply editing a family document, the need to switch back to a lighter theme can become essential. So, how do you navigate through the settings to turn off dark mode on Word?

To turn off dark mode on Word, go to the “File” tab, select “Options,” then find the “General” section. From there, look for the “Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office” area, and change the “Office Theme” dropdown to “Colorful” or “White.” Click “OK” to save your changes, and dark mode will be disabled.

To elaborate, first, open Word and navigate to the top left corner where you’ll find the “File” tab. Clicking there will open a menu; from this menu, select “Options.” This action will open the Word Options dialog box. In the Options window, look for the “General” category on the left-hand side, which allows you to adjust various settings for your Word application.

Once in the General section, scroll until you find “Personalize your copy of Microsoft Office.” Here, you will see an option labeled “Office Theme”. Click the dropdown menu next to it. You will have several options, including “Dark Gray,” “Black,” “Colorful,” and “White.” To turn off dark mode, select either “Colorful” or “White”–these choices will give you a bright interface that makes text and elements easier to view and read.

Finally, after choosing your preferred theme, click the “OK” button at the bottom right of the window to apply your changes. When you return to your document, you will see that the dark mode has been successfully turned off, and you can resume your work with a visually pleasant background that suits your needs.
