How to make eggnog

As the holiday season approaches, many people find themselves reminiscing about cozy gatherings filled with laughter, warmth, and delicious treats. One classic beverage that often graces the tables of festive celebrations is eggnog–a rich, creamy drink that evokes feelings of nostalgia and joy. However, if you’re new to the world of holiday drinks or just looking to impress your guests with a homemade version, you might wonder: how do you make the perfect eggnog?

To make eggnog, you’ll need 6 egg yolks, 3/4 cup sugar, 4 cups milk, 1 cup heavy cream, 1 cup rum or bourbon (optional), 1 tsp vanilla extract, and ground nutmeg. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar until smooth, combine with milk and cream, and chill. Serve with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top.

Making eggnog from scratch is easier than you might think! Start by separating six large eggs, placing the yolks in a mixing bowl and the whites aside for another use. Whisk the yolks with 3/4 cup of granulated sugar until the mixture becomes creamy and pale. In a saucepan, combine 4 cups of milk and 1 cup of heavy cream, heating it gently until it’s warm but not boiling. Gradually add the warm milk and cream to the egg yolk mixture, whisking constantly to prevent curdling. Once combined, return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring frequently, until it thickens slightly–around 5-7 minutes. Remove it from the heat, and if desired, stir in 1 cup of rum or bourbon, along with 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Chill the eggnog in the refrigerator for several hours or until completely cooled. When ready to serve, give it a good stir and ladle it into glasses, finishing off with a sprinkle of freshly grated nutmeg for that signature festive touch. Enjoy your homemade eggnog at your next holiday gathering!
