How to mix concrete

To mix concrete, combine one part cement, two parts sand, and three parts gravel in a mixing container. Gradually add water until you achieve a thick, workable consistency.

To elaborate, start by gathering your materials: Portland cement, sand, gravel (or aggregates), and clean water. You’ll need a mixing container–this can be a wheelbarrow or a large bucket–where the mixing will take place. The standard concrete mix ratio is 1:2:3 (cement:sand:gravel), but you can adjust the quantities based on your project’s requirements. First, measure out the dry ingredients, ensuring you maintain the correct ratio for your desired strength. Pour these into your mixing container and mix them thoroughly using a shovel or hoe until they are well-combined and appear uniform in color.

Slowly pour in water while continuing to mix, adding it incrementally until you reach a thick yet workable consistency that holds its shape when formed. Be careful not to overwater, as this can weaken the concrete. Once mixed, promptly pour the concrete into your mold or the area you’ve prepared, being sure to spread it evenly and tap out any air pockets. Use tools such as a trowel for a smooth finish. Finally, allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 to 48 hours before removing forms or placing any weight on it, ensuring you’ve created a firm and durable structure.
