To ripen bananas, place them in a brown paper bag at room temperature, optionally adding an apple or other ripe fruit to speed up the process, or scatter them on a plate in a warm area of your kitchen.

To expand on that, bananas ripen naturally due to the production of ethylene gas, a plant hormone that promotes ripening. To speed up this process, one of the easiest and most effective methods is to place your unripe bananas in a brown paper bag. The bag traps the ethylene gas, concentrating it around the bananas and accelerating their ripening. For an even faster result, adding a ripe apple or another ethylene-producing fruit to the bag can significantly boost the gas concentration.

Another technique involves wrapping the banana stems with plastic wrap, again to contain the ethylene gas, or simply placing the bananas in a warm area of your kitchen; warmth encourages ripening. If you’re in a real rush, you can also use your oven: wrapping the bananas in foil and placing them in an oven at 300°F (about 150°C) for 15-30 minutes can give them a head start on ripening. However, this method may alter the taste and texture somewhat, so it’s best reserved for when you absolutely need a ripe banana right away. Keep checking your bananas daily, as they can go from green to overripe in just a day or two.
