We’ve all been there: you’re in a quiet meeting, a movie, or perhaps even a cozy dinner with friends, and your iPhone starts buzzing with notifications. In an effort to avoid an embarrassing interruption, you instinctively reach for your phone, but the situation quickly turns frantic as you fumble to silence it. If you find yourself wondering how to turn off your iPhone in these moments, or even to simply power it down as you prepare for a digital detox, you’re not alone. Knowing how to achieve this can save you from those awkward moments and give you peace of mind.

To turn off your iPhone, press and hold the power button and the volume down button simultaneously until you see the “slide to power off” option on your screen.

To power off your iPhone in more detail, follow these steps based on your model. For iPhone X or later, press and hold the side button and either volume button until the “slide to power off” slider appears. Then, slide the slider to the right to turn off your device. For iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, quickly press and release the volume up button, then quickly press and release the volume down button. Next, press and hold the side button until the slider appears, and slide to power off. For iPhone 7 and 7 Plus, press and hold the volume down button and the side button together until the slider appears. If you have an iPhone SE or iPhone 6s and earlier, press and hold the top (or side) button until the “slide to power off” slider appears. Make sure to wait a few seconds for your iPhone to completely shut down before attempting to turn it back on by pressing the side or top button again.
