How to wash wool

Wool is a beloved fabric known for its warmth and softness, but caring for it can feel intimidating, especially for those unfamiliar with its delicate nature. Imagine pulling out your favorite wool sweater from the back of your closet, only to find it has a stain or is simply in need of a refresh after months of wear. You may find yourself standing in the laundry room, pondering the best approach to clean this treasured garment without ruining it. With the right techniques, washing wool can be simple and effective, ensuring your items stay beautiful for years to come.

To wash wool, hand wash it in cool water with a gentle detergent, or use a washing machine’s wool cycle if available. Lay flat to dry.

Washing wool requires special care to maintain its texture and durability. First, check the care label for specific instructions, as some wool items may be labeled as machine-washable, while others may require hand washing only. If you choose to hand wash, fill a basin or sink with cool water and add a small amount of gentle detergent designed for wool. Submerge the item and gently agitate the water while avoiding twisting or rubbing, which can lead to felting. After about 10 minutes, drain the soapy water and rinse the wool under cool, clean water until all detergent is removed.

For machine washing, select the wool or delicate cycle with cool water, and always place the wool item inside a mesh laundry bag for added protection. Use only a wool-friendly detergent and avoid fabric softeners, as they can damage the fibers. Once washed, never wring out the wool; instead, gently press the water out and lay the garment flat on a clean towel. Roll the towel to remove excess moisture and then reshape the item to its original form. Allow it to air dry flat, away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Following these steps will help preserve the quality of your wool garments for many more seasons to come.
